This is not a traditional Classroom |
There are no individual desks in rows and columns. There is no "front" of the room. There is no teacher desk. Lecturing is very difficult in a room like this... and that's a good thing.

This is not a computer lab |
This is a collaboration space. This is a creative space. This is a communication space. This is a place for thinking and producing.

The Design Challenge
The learning environment outside the school is changing. Learning can happen anytime, anywhere. The teacher-centered rows-and-columns classroom of the 1800s or the 1950s isn't working anymore. Schools need to be redesigned to meet students' needs.
Our challenges:
Our challenges:
- How might we design a classroom that promotes student-centered learning and productive group work?
- How might we create relevant, positive solutions that improve student learning?
- How might we use classroom space in different ways to help set students at ease?
- How might we create a flexible space that meets the different needs of students throughout the day?
- How might we design a classroom that promotes the 4Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity?
The Design Process
The room was designed using a collaborative Design Thinking process. Learn more about Design Thinking at

The learning space integrates the three tenets of classroom design:
The learning lounge area provides comfortable spaces for flexible work. The two-level seating area around Display 2 allows 12 adults to sit comfortably for a collaborative session or video conference. The couch and bench accommodate participants that need an isolated or cozy space. The couch has power outlets for recharging laptops, phones, and tablets.
